THE PLOT
What happens when the world you know disappears beneath the water? That’s the beginning of Flow (2024), a beautifully animated adventure from Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis.
The story follows a small black cat living a peaceful and solitary life in a world seemingly abandoned by humans. But when a mysterious flood begins swallowing everything in its path, the cat is forced to flee its home and search for safety.
Finding refuge aboard a drifting boat, the cat encounters an unusual collection of travelling companions, including a friendly capybara, a playful dog, a curious lemur and a majestic bird.
As the unlikely group journeys across a breathtaking flooded landscape, they must overcome their differences, face unexpected dangers and learn to trust one another in order to survive.
What makes Flow particularly special is that the entire story unfolds without spoken dialogue. Instead, the film relies on expressive animation, animal behaviour, beautiful music and visual storytelling to communicate its emotional journey.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Flow is a moving adventure about friendship, courage, survival and discovering that even the most independent creatures sometimes need a little help from their friends.
