“Hard Truths” Now Showing!

Hard Truths is a feature film written and directed by Mike Leigh, shot in May and June of 2023, and produced by Georgina Lowe through their company, Thin Man Films. Set in London, Leigh’s new film explores family dynamics in the post-pandemic world. Following over a decade of creating epic period films like Mr. Turner and Peterloo, Leigh returns to his signature exploration of contemporary life with this tragi-comic portrayal of human strengths and flaws.

Since his first feature, Bleak Moments (1971), Mike Leigh has crafted twenty-one full-length films, eight of which were made for British television (1972-1984) and filmed on celluloid. The rest have been widely acclaimed theatrical releases, many of which have garnered international awards and commercial success.

Leigh’s films are known for their deep focus on characters and the human condition. He has built a reputation for creating richly detailed characterizations and eliciting vivid performances from his actors. As both writer and director, Leigh merges the typically separate processes of writing, rehearsing, and shooting, allowing the creative journey to unfold naturally. This approach, which involves months of improvisation, research, and discussion, helps Leigh discover the essence of each story as it evolves during production.

Collaboration is key to Leigh’s method. He works closely with his cast and crew, fostering a harmonious environment on set. The creative freedom Leigh provides his team has been essential in ensuring freshness and diversity in his projects. This collaborative spirit has contributed not only to the success of his films but also to his numerous original stage plays. These have included productions for the National Theatre of Great Britain, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and several runs in London’s West End. Leigh’s unique filmmaking process and commitment to character-driven stories continue to define his exceptional body of work.

Set in London, “Hard Truths” follows Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a woman grappling with depression and a tendency toward anger. She suffers from agoraphobia, hypochondria, and a relentless paranoia about animals, birds, insects, plants, and flowers. Her life is filled with tension, particularly with her plumber husband, Curtley, and her unemployed son, Moses, whom she believes is squandering his potential.

Her sister Chantelle, on the other hand, runs a successful hair salon and embraces life as a single mother. She lives contentedly with her two daughters: Kayla, who works in cosmetics, and Aleisha, a trainee lawyer.

Though initially resistant, Pansy reluctantly agrees to visit their mother Pearl’s grave on Mother’s Day. During the visit, old resentments surface, as Pansy accuses Chantelle of having been their mother’s favorite. Pansy harbors lingering anger, partly because she was the one who found Pearl’s body after her death. Overcome with emotion, Pansy breaks down, and the two sisters share a tearful hug. Chantelle reassures Pansy that the family loves her, rejecting her sister’s belief that they all hate her.

The film has been lauded for its raw and authentic portrayal of mental health challenges. Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s performance as Pansy has received particular acclaim, with critics highlighting its depth and sincerity. Roger Ebert’s review describes “Hard Truths” as a “tragi-comedy character study of near-febrile vitality,” marking it as one of the standout films of 2024. Time magazine praises the film for its “nuanced performance” and its ability to “invite viewers to empathize” with Pansy’s journey, emphasizing themes of human vulnerability and compassion.
”Hard Truths” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 and was subsequently showcased at several other prestigious festivals, including the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. It was released in U.S. theaters on January 10, 2025, and due to release in Australia, March 6, 2025.
