Scheduled for release on March 27, 2025, “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” marks a significant milestone as the first fully animated Looney Tunes feature created for cinema audiences.
Directed by Peter Browngardt, the film showcases the beloved characters Porky Pig and Daffy Duck as Earth’s unexpected heroes in a high-stakes adventure.
The Looney Tunes’ venture into the world of sports-themed adventures isn’t new. In 1996, “Space Jam” combined live-action and animation, featuring basketball legend Michael Jordan teaming up with Bugs Bunny and the gang for a high-octane basketball game against alien adversaries. This blend of sports and animation was revisited in 2021 with “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” where LeBron James joined forces with the Tunes in a digital realm to win a basketball game and rescue his son. While “The Day the Earth Blew Up” doesn’t center around a sports narrative, it continues the tradition of the Looney Tunes engaging in extraordinary escapades that blend humor, action, and heart. Both this upcoming film and the “Space Jam” series highlight the enduring appeal of these animated characters and their ability to adapt to various storytelling formats.
Initially slated for release on HBO Max and Cartoon Network’s “ACME Night” block, the film’s distribution underwent several changes due to corporate restructuring at Warner Bros. Discovery. In June 2023, it was retitled “Looney Tunes: Bubble Brains” and later reverted to its original title. Early reviews highlight the film’s adherence to the classic Looney Tunes humor and animation style, earning praise for its nostalgic yet fresh approach. Audiences have lauded the dynamic between Porky and Daffy, appreciating the blend of action and comedy.
Plot: Porky Pig and Daffy Duck become Earth’s only hope when their antics at the local bubble-gum factory uncover a secret alien mind-control plot. Faced with cosmic odds, they must save their town and the world while not driving each other totally looney.
Let’s all laugh at the Duck, no – I surely will not be missing out on seeing the ‘Tunes on the Big Screen – March 27, 2025.
