Highly anticipated eighth installment in the iconic action-spy franchise, directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Co-written with Erik Jendresen, the film serves as a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). Tom Cruise returns as the indomitable Ethan Hunt, alongside franchise veterans Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett.
Picking up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt resumes his desperate mission to stop Gabriel from gaining control of a powerful AI program known as “the Entity.” As global threats escalate, Hunt and the IMF team must navigate betrayal, shifting alliances, and impossible odds to prevent catastrophe.
The road to The Final Reckoning was anything but smooth. Initially planned to be shot back-to-back with its predecessor, scheduling and pandemic-related delays forced a change in plans. By early 2022, McQuarrie had begun a significant rewrite of the script, and principal photography kicked off in March that year. The ambitious production spanned numerous international locations, including Longcross Studios and the Lake District in the UK, Malta, South Africa, Norway, and Italy, where scenes were filmed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush.
True to Mission: Impossible tradition, the film promises jaw-dropping stunts. One of the most daring involved Tom Cruise hanging from a biplane flying upside down, with co-star Esai Morales also participating in the sequence. The pilot wore a greenscreen suit to be removed digitally, showcasing the franchise’s commitment to practical effects and death-defying realism.
By November 2024, the film wrapped production and entered post-production. With delays driving the budget to an estimated $400 million, expectations for the film are sky-high. Yet, this may not be the end of the road for Ethan Hunt. Despite the “final” in the title, both McQuarrie and Cruise have hinted at continuing the saga. Cruise has expressed enthusiasm for playing Ethan well into his later years, much like Harrison Ford did with Indiana Jones.
Experience the ultimate mission—nonstop action, breathtaking stunts, and Ethan Hunt’s final reckoning. Only in cinemas May 17 with Paramount Pictures.
