From the mind behind the breakout horror hit Barbarian comes a bold new vision. Weapons is a genre-defying psychological thriller arriving in Australian cinemas on August 7 2025.
Written, directed and co-composed by Zach Cregger, the film marks his most ambitious and twisted project yet, delivering an original story that blends suspense, surrealism and human emotion.
The premise is haunting. One night at 2:17 a.m., all but one child from a single classroom mysteriously vanish, never to return. With no answers and growing panic, Weapons dives into the chaos that grips the community left behind. Through a fragmented, character-driven narrative, the film explores not just the horror of what happened but the deeper traumas and personal demons of those affected.
Leading the stellar cast is Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (Dune Part Two), who also serves as executive producer, alongside Emmy winner Julia Garner (Ozark), Alden Ehrenreich (Oppenheimer), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), Benedict Wong (3 Body Problem), and rising star Cary Christopher. Each actor headlines a distinct chapter of the film, offering multiple perspectives in a narrative that continually evolves every twenty minutes.
Director Zach Cregger describes Weapons as a film that reinvents itself, drawing on the emotional aftermath of grief and personal loss. “It’s a twisty, turn-y movie,” he says, “but it’s also funny, scary and deeply human.”
Cinematographer Larkin Seiple (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and composer trio Cregger and the Holladay brothers bring surreal texture and atmosphere to the experience.
Shot in Atlanta and produced by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., Weapons aims to do what few horror films dare – surprise and devastate in equal measure. With a deeply personal origin and a cinematic vision unlike any other, this is not just a movie but a mystery that demands to be witnessed on the big screen.
Weapons opens in Australian cinemas on August 7 2025.
