Sony Pictures Australia is set to release the highly anticipated crime thriller Caught Stealing in Australian cinemas on 28 August 2025.
Directed by award-nominee Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, The Whale) and based on Charlie Huston’s cult novel of the same name, this film promises a thrilling ride through 1990s New York with a distinctly dark comedic edge.
The story follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out ex-baseball player turned down-on-his-luck bartender, played by Austin Butler. Living a quiet life in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Hank’s world is turned upside down when his eccentric neighbour Russ (played by Matt Smith) asks him to catsit. What seems like a simple favour quickly spirals into chaos when Hank is mistaken for Russ by rival gang members. Suddenly caught between mobsters in pursuit of a missing four million dollars, Hank must think fast, run faster and survive long enough to figure out what’s going on.
Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two, The Bikeriders) leads a powerhouse ensemble including Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) as Hank’s no-nonsense EMT girlfriend Yvonne, Regina King as the unrelenting investigator Roman, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Carol Kane, Bad Bunny, Action Bronson and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai.
Aronofsky is joined once again by longtime collaborators Matthew Libatique on cinematography and Andrew Weisblum in the editing chair.
Caught Stealing blends dark comedy, brutal action and a pulsating New York vibe. Described as a fun and edgy caper, it offers a refreshing twist on the crime genre. With Butler continuing his strong run after Elvis, alongside Matt Smith from House of the Dragon, and Aronofsky stepping into a more playful lane, Aussie audiences are in for a wild, unforgettable experience this August.
Don’t miss it – Caught Stealing arrives 28 August in cinemas across Australia.
