Avatar: Fire and Ash – Dec 18

Avatar: Fire and Ash returns audiences to the sweeping beauty and emotional intensity of Pandora, continuing James Cameron’s visionary saga with a story that is both breathtaking and deeply human.

Picking up only weeks after the events of The Way of Water, the film follows Jake Sully, Neytiri and their family as they navigate grief, danger and a changing world that challenges everything they believe in. The Sullys remain among the Metkayina, learning to live with the heartbreaking loss of Neteyam, each family member coping in their own way as they try to move forward.

Their journey takes a dramatic turn when Spider’s safety becomes uncertain, prompting an introduction to the nomadic Wind Traders, a vibrant new clan who travel the skies in spectacular airships. What begins as a mission to return Spider to High Camp quickly becomes a confrontation with a powerful new threat. The Ash People, led by the fearsome Varang, launch an attack that thrusts the Sullys into escalating conflict. Once a clan not unlike the Omatikaya, the Ash People’s lives were shattered by a volcanic disaster, leaving their world coated in soot and their faith in Eywa broken. Their grief and rage have transformed them into a force unlike anything Pandora has seen.

As the Sullys face new enemies and uneasy alliances, the film dives deeper into themes of family, responsibility and the scars of war. Jake and Lo’ak’s relationship becomes a central thread, exploring the pressures of legacy, identity and the struggle to understand each other. Neytiri, meanwhile, grapples with sorrow and her complicated feelings toward Spider, pushing her beliefs and resilience to their limits.

Visually, the film expands the world of Pandora with grandeur and imagination. The Wind Traders’ skyborne culture, filled with music, colour and handcrafted artistry, contrasts sharply with the stark, haunting world of the Ash People. Meticulous performance capture and cutting-edge visual effects once again allow the Na’vi to feel profoundly real, with every movement and expression shaped by the actors’ performances.

Underneath the spectacle, Avatar: Fire and Ash remains a story about connection, healing and the choices families make when their world is torn apart. It embraces adventure and action while never losing sight of its emotional core, inviting audiences to return to the cinema not only for the scale, but for the heart.

Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in Australian cinemas on 18 December 2025.
