The Gate (1987)

The Gate is a 1987 supernatural horror film directed by Tibor Takács, featuring Stephen Dorff in his feature film debut. The story follows two young boys who discover a mysterious hole in a backyard, only to accidentally open a gateway that unleashes a terrifying horde of ancient demons into their world.

A Canadian-American co-production, The Gate proved to be a box office success, earning approximately twice its production budget. Over the years, the film has developed a passionate cult following, becoming a nostalgic favourite among fans of practical effects and 1980s horror.

Its success led to the 1990 sequel, The Gate II: Trespassers, which once again explored the dark supernatural forces lurking beyond the gateway.

Years later, a 3D remake directed by Alex Winter entered development and was initially planned for release in 2011. However, the project ultimately never reached cinemas.
