The nightmare begins again as Resident Evil returns to cinemas with an all-new story from Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons.
In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.
Director Zach Cregger is taking Resident Evil in a fresh direction, telling an original story set within the universe without using established characters such as Leon S. Kennedy. A longtime fan and player of the games, Cregger describes the film as a “love letter” to the franchise rather than another adaptation of stories fans already know.
While the filmmaker says the movie will feel very different from Barbarian and Weapons, he has compared its wild energy to Evil Dead II. The biggest inspiration comes directly from the games.
The story unfolds alongside the Raccoon City outbreak of Resident Evil 2, but within a contemporary alternate timeline, following a separate nightmare occurring on the edges of the chaos while capturing the atmosphere, tension and pacing of the games.
The doors to Raccoon City are opening once again, and this adaptation is helmed by a true king of shock and terror. Expect a bloodbath of epic proportions, but with Cregger behind the camera, this could also be a perfectly executed work of horror art.
