Bugonia – Oct 30

From visionary filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, the acclaimed director of Poor Things, The Favourite and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, comes BUGONIA, a darkly comic psychological thriller about paranoia, power, and the fragile line between truth and madness.

The film follows two conspiracy-obsessed cousins, Teddy (played by Jesse Plemons) and Don (newcomer Aidan Delbis), who kidnap Michelle (portrayed by Emma Stone), a ruthless CEO of a powerful pharmaceutical company. Convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying humanity, the pair chain her in a basement and interrogate her about a supposed plan involving ecological collapse and bee extinction. As the hours stretch into days, their warped mission spirals into a claustrophobic battle of wits that exposes uncomfortable truths about society, isolation, and human belief.

Alicia Silverstone and Stavros Halkias also feature in supporting roles, Lanthimos reunites with Robbie Ryan (cinematography) and Emma Stone, marking their fifth project together.

Produced by Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Ed Guiney, and Andrew Lowe, Bugonia is an English-language reimagining of the cult Korean film Save the Green Planet. Filmed in VistaVision, it combines striking visual composition with the absurdist, emotionally charged tone that defines Lanthimos’s signature style.

With its mix of sharp social commentary, surreal humour, and psychological intensity, Bugonia explores the modern age of conspiracy and disconnection — a dark reflection of a world where conviction can become delusion.

Bugonia opens in Australian cinemas October 30, 2025.
