From the director of The Jack in the Box comes a terrifying new horror experience where a mysterious board game unleashes something truly sinister.
Movieland Australia recently sat down with horror filmmaker Lawrence Fowler to discuss his latest nightmare, GRIN, the creation of its terrifying creature and the challenges of bringing a new horror villain to life.
The film follows a family who discover an old board game, unknowingly releasing a demon that punishes players for their past sins. With dark family secrets waiting to surface, nobody is safe.
Fowler explained his fascination with haunted objects, having previously explored similar territory in The Jack in the Box. This time, he wanted to combine the adventurous concept of Jumanji with a truly disturbing horror experience.
Creating Grin’s appearance was particularly important. Fowler revealed that the creature’s distinctive horns and unusual smiling eyes were designed to create an instantly recognisable silhouette.
Jeff Fowler brought the creature to life, while actor Lucas Edwards, whose previous experience includes Doctor Who, stepped into the terrifying role.
Fowler also revealed that one of the film’s most challenging scenes involved Grin smashing a prosthetic head against a window during heavy rain. Unfortunately, the creature’s claws kept dropping the head, leaving the crew laughing between takes!
Beyond the scares, Fowler praised the emotional performances that help bring the family’s tragic history to life.
GRIN is available to watch at home on Digital and DVD in Australia.
