Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Principal photography for the film began on February 12, 2024, in Toronto and wrapped on September 30. Additional scenes were filmed in September 2024 at the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and Burghley House in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
Director Guillermo del Toro emphasised that the film is not a horror movie, but rather “an incredibly emotional story.” Composer Alexandre Desplat echoed this sentiment, saying: “Guillermo’s cinema is very lyrical, and my music is rather lyrical too. So I think the music for Frankenstein will be something very lyrical and emotional. I’m not trying to write horrific music.”
The film is set to premiere on Netflix in November 2025.
