The DC Universe is preparing to take flight into bold new territory with Supergirl, the highly anticipated next chapter in DC Studios’ evolving cinematic universe. Following the release of Superman (2025), the upcoming film promises a much darker tone, delivering a cosmic revenge story unlike anything audiences have seen before.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film is based on the acclaimed DC Comics miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) stars as Kara Zor-El (Supergirl). She is joined by an impressive cast including Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa.
Plot: When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.
Unlike previous portrayals of the character, this version of Supergirl dives deeper into Kara’s trauma and isolation after witnessing the destruction of Krypton as a child.
Gillespie has described the film as a “road movie” set across the far reaches of space, featuring nine visually distinct worlds, each with their own cultures and languages. The director has cited films such as True Grit, Logan, John Wick, and The Fifth Element as inspirations, suggesting audiences can expect a grittier and more emotional sci-fi adventure compared to the brighter optimism of Superman.
Produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran for DC Studios, Supergirl is shaping up to be a major step forward for the new DCU, expanding the universe while exploring one of its most powerful and complex heroes.
Supergirl arrives in Australian cinemas June 25.
