The Conjuring: Last Rites is the ninth entry in the blockbuster Conjuring Universe, bringing an unforgettable end to the story of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Directed by Michael Chaves, this spine-chilling film reunites Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson for one last case that hits closer to home than ever before.
The film follows the Warrens as they confront the terrifying Smurl haunting of the mid-1980s. What begins as a family’s ordinary life soon spirals into disturbing encounters that threaten not just their home but also the very heart of the Warren family, their daughter, Judy Warren. Judy, played by Mia Tomlinson, takes center stage, stepping into the frightening legacy of her parents with the support of her boyfriend Tony, portrayed by Ben Hardy.
Alongside them are familiar and new faces including Steve Coulter as Father Gordon, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan and Shannon Kook. Chaves works from a script by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, with franchise creators James Wan and Peter Safran guiding as producers.
Set in 1986, the film captures a time when the Warrens were facing scepticism, health struggles and the challenge of letting their daughter grow into her own strength. This mix of family drama and supernatural horror promises both emotional weight and unrelenting scares.
James Wan describes Last Rites as “the end of an era”, while Chaves says his goal was to “deliver the darkest opening in the series, while finding emotional power in the Warrens’ bond with Judy”. Fans can expect a story that blends terror with heartfelt themes of love, sacrifice and legacy.
The Conjuring: Last Rites will haunt Australian cinemas September 4th 2025.
