It’s time to dust off those ancient Egyptian artefacts, because Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are heading back into the world of The Mummy, and Universal Pictures has officially revealed the title of their long-awaited reunion.
Arriving in cinemas on 15 October 2027, the next instalment will be called The Mummy: Book of the Dead, marking a new chapter for one of cinema’s most beloved action-adventure franchises. For fans who grew up watching Rick O’Connell battle ancient curses, flesh-eating scarabs and resurrected Egyptian priests, the return of the original stars is arguably the biggest attraction.
Brendan Fraser will once again step into the boots of fearless adventurer Rick O’Connell, reuniting with Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell for the first time since 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Interestingly, the upcoming film will move away from the events of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which featured Maria Bello replacing Weisz as Evelyn.
Behind the camera, directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence, will take charge of the production. Their previous work includes Ready or Not, Scream (2022), Scream VI and Abigail.
Long-time fans will immediately recognise the significance of the film’s newly announced title; THE BOOK OF THE DEAD. In the original The Mummy, the mysterious Book of the Dead played a crucial role in accidentally awakening the ancient priest Imhotep, unleashing a terrifying supernatural nightmare upon Rick, Evelyn and their companions.
Whether the infamous artefact will once again become central to the story remains unknown, with Universal keeping the film’s plot tightly under wraps.
The Mummy: Book of the Dead is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas on 15 October 2027.
