David Cronenberg, the Canadian auteur renowned for his cerebral and visceral explorations of body horror, returns with The Shrouds (2025), a film that intertwines grief, technology, and the human condition. Known for classics like Scanners (1981) and The Fly (1986), Cronenberg continues to push the boundaries of genre cinema.
The Shrouds stands out as one of Cronenberg’s most intimate works, deeply influenced by the loss of his wife, Carolyn, in 2017. The film delves into themes of mourning and the lengths one might go to reconnect with the departed.
Set in a near-future Toronto, the narrative follows Karsh Relikh (Vincent Cassel), a tech entrepreneur who creates GraveTech—a system allowing the bereaved to monitor their loved ones’ decomposition in real-time via high-tech burial shrouds. As Karsh becomes obsessed with his deceased wife Becca (Diane Kruger), he uncovers unsettling anomalies in the system, leading him down a path of conspiracy and introspection.
The Shrouds continues Cronenberg’s exploration of the intersection between humanity and technology, echoing themes from Scanners, where individuals with telepathic abilities grapple with their powers, and The Fly, which delves into the consequences of scientific hubris.
