Tron Ares – Oct 9

The world of Tron is preparing to expand once more with Tron Ares, the long-awaited third film in the iconic science fiction series. Directed by Joachim Rønning from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow and based on a story by David Digilio and Wigutow, this highly anticipated instalment arrives in cinemas on October 9. Serving as a soft reboot / sequel to Tron: Legacy while also opening the door to new possibilities, Tron: Ares combines nostalgia for fans of the original films with an exciting new vision for the franchise.

The film introduces audiences to Ares, a highly sophisticated program who is sent from the digital realm into the real world on a dangerous mission. His journey marks the first encounter between humankind and artificial intelligence beings, setting the stage for a story of conflict and discovery. While continuing the themes that have defined Tron since 1982, this new chapter aims to explore the evolving relationship between humans and the intelligent digital creations of their own design.

Fronting the cast is Jared Leto, who steps into the title role of Ares. Leto, known for his Academy Award winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club and his striking work in films such as Blade Runner 2049 and House of Gucci, also serves as a producer. His involvement goes back years, as he actively campaigned for a part in Tron: Legacy. Now, his persistence has paid off with a character adapted from earlier scripts, ensuring that Ares becomes central to the next phase of the saga.

Joining him is Greta Lee, who recently won acclaim for her powerful performance in Past Lives, Evan Peters, a Golden Globe winner for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and American Horror Story, Legendary actress Gillian Anderson, beloved for The X-Files and fans will also be thrilled to know that Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, reconnecting the film to the legacy of the original Tron.

The music of Tron has always been a defining feature of the franchise. For Tron: Ares, the score is being created by the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. Members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, both Academy Award winners for their haunting work on The Social Network and Soul, are not only composing the soundtrack but also serving as executive producers. Their collaboration promises a sonic landscape that will push the film’s atmosphere into bold and exhilarating territory.

Development of the sequel has been a long journey. Talks for a continuation began as early as October 2010 following the release of Tron: Legacy. In 2017, Disney shifted plans toward a soft reboot rather than a direct continuation, The concept evolved from conversations between franchise creator Steven Lisberger and producer Justin Springer during the making of Legacy.

Inspired by Lisberger’s time near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1970s and 1980s, the focus turned from alien encounters to the idea that the unknown might come from within machines themselves, raising questions about intelligence created by humans yet no longer controlled by them.

With state-of-the-art visuals, a dynamic ensemble cast and music that will shake cinema walls, Tron: Ares is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious science fiction releases of the decade. It honours the past while charging into the future, expanding a universe that has captivated audiences for over forty years.

Tron: Ares opens in cinemas October 9.

End of line.
