Artificial intelligence may be changing the world around us, but Klara and the Sun is less interested in the technology itself than the deeply human emotions surrounding it. Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel, the 2026 science-fiction drama arrives in Australian cinemas on October 22, bringing together an impressive cast led by Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams.
Plot: Klara (Ortega), an Artificial Friend designed to prevent loneliness, is purchased by a mother and her bright teen daughter, Josie. Josie, who suffers from a mysterious illness, adores her new robot companion. On a quest to save Josie and those who love her from heartbreak, Klara learns the power of human love.
Rather than presenting another dark vision of machines taking over humanity, Klara and the Sun turns its attention towards love, companionship and what separates genuine emotion from something programmed to imitate it.
Directed and co-written by Taika Waititi – embracing one of his more dramatic stories and Ortega stepping away from the darker characters audiences have become accustomed to seeing her play, Klara and the Sun could offer something surprisingly warm, thoughtful and emotional when it reaches cinemas this October.
